What is percale?
It's a generic term for a type of weave in cotton but can also be a mix of cotton and polyester. Percale is the name of the weave and not the yarn, it's gauge is called thread count: the amount of threads per square inch.
Percale is generally more than 200 thread count: similar premise to knotting in Oriental rugs, the smaller the weave the finer the fabric. So has a better handle than coarser weaves, washes better and has a longer life.
The term may have originated from the ancient Greek language parákletos the meaning roughly translated is 'lawyer' which is quite amusing when you think about it: with it's connotations of something smooth and slippery.
It was imported to Europe from India in the 18th and 19th centuries and manufactured originally in France. Though there are historical references to it as far back as the 13th century.
We have a fine selection of percale bedding in fitted sheets, flat sheets, oxford and euro size pillowcases, duvet covers and valances in all sizes up to super king.
